Universal Kids Resort Guide: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go
After visiting Universal Kids Resort with our 3-year-old and 5-year-old—and staying overnight at the Universal Kids Resort Hotel—we quickly realized this isn’t just a smaller version of a traditional theme park. It was designed specifically with young kids in mind, making it one of the most stress-free theme park experiences we’ve had as a family.
Unlike larger parks where little ones spend much of the day watching older kids ride attractions they aren’t tall enough for, nearly everything at Universal Kids Resort is built for children ages 3–8. From gentle rides and interactive play areas to splash pads, live shows, and character meet-and-greets, there’s something around every corner to keep young kids entertained.
In this guide, we’re sharing everything we learned during our visit, including:
- Every ride and its height requirement
- Splash pads, playgrounds, and live shows
- The paid add-on experiences that are worth considering
- Our review of the Universal Kids Resort Hotel
- The benefits of staying overnight, including early park admission
- Food options inside both the park and hotel
- Tips that would have made our visit even easier
- Answers to the questions parents ask most before visiting
Whether you’re planning a quick day trip or a weekend getaway, our goal is to help you know exactly what to expect so you can spend less time planning and more time making memories with your family.

Is Universal Kids Resort Worth It?
If your kids are between the ages of 3 and 8, our answer is a definite yes.
After visiting with our own 3-year-old and 5-year-old, this quickly became one of our favorite theme park experiences for young children. Instead of spending the day saying, “Maybe next year when you’re taller,” we found ourselves saying, “Which ride should we do again?”
Everything—from the attractions and playgrounds to the shows and character experiences—feels like it was thoughtfully designed for younger kids. Even when we weren’t riding something, our kids were busy exploring interactive play areas, splashing in the water features, or dancing along during the live entertainment.
One of our favorite parts was that the park never felt overwhelming. Because it’s smaller than a traditional Universal or Disney park, it was easy to get from one area to another without long walks or constantly checking a map. That meant more time having fun and fewer tired little legs.
If you’re traveling with toddlers, preschoolers, or early elementary-aged kids, Universal Kids Resort offers a full day of entertainment without the exhaustion that often comes with larger theme parks.

Height Requirements at Universal Kids Resort
One of the biggest questions parents ask before visiting Universal Kids Resort is whether their child will be tall enough to enjoy the rides.
The good news is that this park was built with younger children in mind. Unlike many traditional theme parks, the height requirements here are much lower, allowing many preschoolers and early elementary-aged kids to experience the majority of the attractions. Official ride requirements generally range from no minimum height on some attractions to approximately 42 inches for the park’s tallest requirement.
Before You Go
We recommend measuring your child at home before your trip. Knowing their height ahead of time can help set expectations and avoid disappointment once you’re inside the park.
Keep in mind:
- Every attraction has its own official measuring station.
- Ride operators make the final decision on whether a guest meets the height requirement.
- Many attractions also require younger riders to be accompanied by a supervising adult.
- Hand-held infants are not permitted on rides, even those with no minimum height requirement.
Don’t Worry If Your Child Isn’t Tall Enough
One thing we loved about Universal Kids Resort is that rides are only part of the experience.
Even if your child doesn’t meet every height requirement, they’ll still have plenty to enjoy, including:
- Interactive playgrounds
- Splash pads and water play areas
- Character meet-and-greets
- Live shows and dance parties
- Sensory-friendly spaces
- Interactive play experiences throughout the park
We never felt like our kids were running out of things to do. In fact, some of their favorite moments had nothing to do with rides at all—they loved dancing with characters, exploring the playgrounds, and cooling off in the splash areas.
Explore Every Land at Universal Kids Resort
One of the things we loved most about Universal Kids Resort is how each themed land feels like stepping into a completely different world. Instead of one large park with random attractions, every area is designed around characters that young kids already know and love.
Our recommendation is to slow down and explore each land instead of rushing from ride to ride. Some of our kids’ favorite memories weren’t even on the attractions—they were dancing with characters, climbing through playgrounds, and discovering interactive details hidden throughout the park.
Let’s take a look at what you’ll find in each area.
DreamWorks’ Shrek
If your kids love Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, or Puss in Boots, this is likely where you’ll want to start your day. DreamWorks’ Shrek feels like you’ve stepped right into the swamp, with colorful scenery, playful details, and some of the most charming attractions in the park.
Attractions
Shrek’s Swamp for Little Ogres
This gentle family ride is perfect for all ages and is a great first attraction for younger children. There are no big drops or scary moments—just a fun adventure through Shrek’s world.
Live Entertainment
Keep an eye on the entertainment schedule for the Puss in Boots live show. It’s energetic, interactive, and a great opportunity to take a break from the rides while still keeping little ones entertained.
Character Meet-and-Greets
This is one of the best places in the park to meet some of DreamWorks’ most beloved characters. During our visit, the character interactions never felt rushed, giving the kids plenty of time for hugs, high-fives, and photos.
Play Areas
Don’t rush out of this land after the rides. There are interactive spaces where kids can climb, explore, and simply burn off energy—something we really appreciated between attractions.
Parent Tip
Visit this land early in the morning if Shrek and Puss in Boots are at the top of your family’s must-do list. Character lines tend to be shortest during the first part of the day, making it easier to fit in rides, photos, and shows before the crowds build.
DreamWorks’ Trolls
If there was one land that perfectly captured the energy of Universal Kids Resort, it was DreamWorks’ Trolls. Bright colors, upbeat music, and interactive experiences make this one of the most exciting areas of the park, especially for kids who love to dance and sing along.
Even if your little ones have never watched a Trolls movie, they’ll still be drawn in by the music, playful atmosphere, and larger-than-life decorations.
Attractions
Trolls Trollercoaster
The Trolls Trollercoaster is one of the park’s signature attractions and a fantastic introduction to roller coasters for young kids. It offers just enough speed and excitement to feel like a “big kid” ride without being overwhelming.
If your child has been asking to ride their first roller coaster, this is the perfect place to start.
Parent Tip: Head here early in the morning or later in the evening. This is one of the park’s most popular rides, and the wait time can build quickly during the middle of the day.
Trollify Face Painting Experience
One of the most unique experiences in the park is the Trollify makeover.
For an additional fee, kids can transform into their favorite Troll with colorful face paint and wildly creative hairstyles. While it’s completely optional, it’s a fun splurge if your child loves Trolls and wants an extra-special souvenir from the day.
If this experience is on your must-do list, we recommend booking it earlier in the day, as appointment times can fill up during busy weekends and school holidays.
Live Entertainment
The Trolls live show quickly became one of our favorite entertainment offerings in the park.
Expect upbeat music, dancing, colorful costumes, and plenty of opportunities for kids to sing and move along with their favorite characters. Even parents may find themselves clapping along before it’s over!
This is also a great chance to rest your feet while still keeping little ones completely entertained.
Character Meet-and-Greets
Don’t miss the chance to meet your favorite Trolls characters during your visit. Character appearances happen throughout the day, so be sure to check the Universal app or the daily entertainment schedule for the latest times.
Parent Tips for the Trolls Land
- Ride the Trollercoaster early to avoid the longest waits.
- If your child wants the Trollify makeover, schedule it earlier in the day.
- Plan to catch the live show—it was one of the highlights of our visit.
- Take a few extra minutes to enjoy all the interactive details throughout the land. There are so many colorful photo opportunities that it’s worth slowing down and exploring.
Our Take: This was easily one of the happiest areas in the entire park. Between the music, dancing, attractions, and interactive experiences, it felt impossible not to smile while walking through. If your kids love high-energy entertainment, they’ll probably want to come back here more than once during your visit.
Isle of Curiosity
The Isle of Curiosity is the heart of Universal Kids Resort and the first area you’ll experience when you enter the park. Rather than being themed to just one movie or character, this colorful central hub is designed as a place for families to play, explore, relax, and recharge between adventures.
If you’re visiting with younger kids, don’t rush through this area. We found ourselves coming back multiple times throughout the day because it offers a nice change of pace from the rides while still feeling full of energy and excitement.
Gabby’s Cat-Tastic Dance Party
Fans of Gabby’s Dollhouse won’t want to miss Gabby’s Cat-Tastic Dance Party.
This interactive show invites kids to dance, sing, and play alongside Gabby in a high-energy celebration that’s perfect for little ones who love to move. Instead of sitting quietly in an audience, children become part of the experience, making it one of the most engaging entertainment offerings in the park.
Be sure to check the Universal app or the daily entertainment schedule for showtimes.
Cakey’s Cupcakes
Need a sweet treat?
Cakey’s Cupcakes is one of the cutest snack stops in the park, serving colorful cupcakes inspired by Gabby’s Dollhouse. It’s a fun place to take a break, grab dessert, and enjoy a little downtime before heading back to the attractions.
Universal Kids Resort Café
The Isle of Curiosity is also home to the Universal Kids Resort Café, making it a convenient stop whether you’re looking for a full meal, a quick snack, or somewhere to cool off indoors.
Because it’s located near the center of the park, it’s an easy place to regroup before continuing your adventure.
Interactive Play Areas
One of our favorite things about the Isle of Curiosity is that it gives kids space to simply be kids.
Instead of rushing from ride to ride, little ones can climb, explore, and burn off energy in thoughtfully designed play spaces. We loved having an area where our kids could slow down, play freely, and enjoy themselves without standing in another line.
Parent Tip
Don’t think of the Isle of Curiosity as just the entrance to the park—it’s a destination all on its own. We found ourselves returning throughout the day to grab a snack, let the kids play, and enjoy some shade before heading off to the next themed land.
Our Take: This quickly became one of our favorite areas of Universal Kids Resort. It perfectly captures what makes this park different from larger theme parks. Instead of focusing only on rides, it encourages kids to play, imagine, dance, and simply enjoy being little.
Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants Bikini Bottom
If your kids are SpongeBob fans, prepare to spend a lot of time in Bikini Bottom. This colorful land feels like you’ve stepped straight into the TV show, with familiar locations, playful attractions, interactive experiences, and some of the best photo opportunities in the park.
Even if your kids haven’t watched every episode, the bright colors, silly humor, and family-friendly attractions make this one of the most fun areas to explore together.
Attractions
Bikini Bottom is home to several attractions inspired by the world of SpongeBob SquarePants, giving families multiple ways to play together.
Some of the highlights include:
- Mrs. Puff’s Boating School, where kids can hop aboard for their own boating adventure.
- Jellyfish Fields Jamboree, a playful family attraction inspired by SpongeBob’s favorite pastime.
- Barnacle Bus, which takes families on a colorful ride through Bikini Bottom.
- Bobbing Barrels, an interactive attraction where families can spin while blasting water cannons at each other—especially refreshing on a hot Texas afternoon.
We loved that this land offers a nice mix of gentle rides and interactive experiences, making it easy for the whole family to participate together.
Meet SpongeBob and Friends
One of the biggest highlights of Bikini Bottom is the chance to meet some of Nickelodeon’s most iconic characters.
Depending on the day’s schedule, you may have the opportunity to meet:
- SpongeBob SquarePants
- Patrick Star
Character appearances are scheduled throughout the day, so be sure to check the Universal Kids Resort app or entertainment schedule after you arrive.
Play Areas
Bikini Bottom isn’t just about rides.
Kids can climb, explore, splash, and burn off energy throughout the land, making it a great place to slow down between attractions. We found that these interactive spaces were just as popular with our kids as the rides themselves.
Dining
If your family works up an appetite, Bikini Bottom is also home to themed dining inspired by the show.
It’s a fun place to grab lunch or a snack while staying immersed in the underwater world, and it’s one of the most creatively themed dining locations in the park.
Parent Tips for Bikini Bottom
- Plan extra time here—there’s more to do than just ride a few attractions.
- If it’s a warm day, consider visiting the water-play attractions in the afternoon when everyone is ready to cool off.
- Don’t skip the character meet-and-greets. SpongeBob and Patrick are some of the most popular characters in the park.
- Take your time exploring the details. There are fun references to the TV show hidden throughout the land that fans will love spotting.
Our Take: Bikini Bottom was one of the most immersive lands at Universal Kids Resort. Everywhere we looked, there were colorful details that made us feel like we’d stepped into an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. Between the attractions, character encounters, and interactive play, it’s easy to spend much longer here than you originally planned.
Jurassic World Adventure Camp
If your kids dream of dinosaurs, Jurassic World Adventure Camp is likely to be one of the first lands they’ll want to explore. This area combines prehistoric adventure with kid-friendly attractions, creating an experience that’s exciting without being too intense for younger visitors.
The atmosphere here feels completely different from the rest of the park. Towering trees, rugged pathways, and larger-than-life dinosaurs make it feel like you’ve stepped into your own Jurassic adventure.
Attractions
Adventure Camp features experiences that encourage kids to become explorers rather than simply passengers.
Families can enjoy attractions designed around dinosaurs and adventure, including opportunities to climb, discover, and experience some of the park’s most exciting rides. One of the area’s signature attractions is the Cretaceous Coaster, a family-friendly coaster that introduces younger riders to bigger thrills without the intensity of a major roller coaster.
Dinosaur Encounters
One of the biggest draws of this land is the opportunity to come face-to-face with dinosaurs.
Throughout the day, you’ll find dinosaur-themed entertainment and encounters that make the land feel alive. These interactive experiences are a huge hit with kids who love all things prehistoric.
Interactive Adventure
This land encourages kids to climb, explore, and use their imagination. Rather than simply moving from ride to ride, there are plenty of opportunities to stop and play, making it one of the most active areas in the park.
Parent Tips for Jurassic World Adventure Camp
- Visit early if your child is excited about the coaster.
- Younger dinosaur lovers may find some of the larger dinosaur encounters exciting but not overwhelming.
- Wear comfortable shoes—this is one of the most adventure-focused lands in the park.
DreamWorks’ Puss in Boots Del Mar
Step into the colorful seaside town of Del Mar, where Puss in Boots, Kitty Softpaws, and Perrito invite families to celebrate with carnival-style games, family attractions, and plenty of swashbuckling fun.
This was one of the most charming lands in the park. It has a completely different feel than Shrek’s Swamp, with bright colors, festive music, and a playful atmosphere that encourages kids to slow down and explore.
Attractions
Puss in Boots Del Mar features family-friendly attractions inspired by the adventurous world of Puss in Boots.
The centerpiece is a gentle family ride that follows Puss and his friends on a playful adventure, making it a great attraction for younger children and parents to enjoy together.
You’ll also find carnival-inspired games and interactive experiences scattered throughout the land, giving kids opportunities to play even when they aren’t waiting for a ride.
Sensory Garden
One of the hidden gems of this area is the Sensory Garden.
Designed as a quieter space, it gives families a chance to step away from the excitement and enjoy a calmer environment. We loved that Universal intentionally included spaces like this throughout the park, making it easier for kids who may need a break from the sights and sounds of a busy theme park.
Whether your child needs a few quiet minutes or your family simply wants a slower pace before heading to the next land, this is a wonderful place to recharge.
Character Meet-and-Greets
Keep an eye out for opportunities to meet:
- Puss in Boots
- Perrito
These character interactions are full of personality and make for some incredibly fun family photos.
Parent Tips for Puss in Boots Del Mar
- Don’t rush through this land. Some of the best experiences here aren’t rides at all.
- Visit the Sensory Garden if your kids need a quiet break from the excitement.
- Take time to play the carnival-style games and explore the interactive details.
- This is one of the most photogenic areas in the park, so keep your camera handy.
Our Take: Puss in Boots Del Mar felt like a hidden gem. It combines gentle attractions, imaginative play, and quieter spaces in a way that makes it enjoyable for the entire family. It’s a great reminder that Universal Kids Resort isn’t just about rides—it’s about creating opportunities for kids to play.
Illumination’s Minions vs. Minions: Bello Bay Club
If your kids have endless energy, they’ll absolutely love Bello Bay Club.
Inspired by Illumination’s mischievous Minions, this land is full of silly surprises, colorful attractions, water play, and nonstop laughs. It’s one of the most energetic areas in the park and a fantastic place for families to cool off during the warmer months.
Attractions
Bello Bay Club features family-friendly attractions that capture the playful chaos of the Minions.
Expect colorful rides, interactive experiences, and plenty of opportunities for parents and kids to laugh together. While a few attractions are geared toward older children, the area still offers plenty for younger guests to enjoy.
Splash Zone
One of the biggest highlights of Bello Bay Club is its water play area.
Kids can run through fountains, splash pads, and interactive water features while parents relax nearby. If you’re visiting during the summer, this is one area you’ll definitely want to pack swimsuits or a change of clothes for.
Parent Tip: We recommend saving the splash areas for later in the afternoon. That way your kids can cool off before heading back to the hotel, and you won’t have to spend the rest of the day walking around in wet clothes.
Meet the Minions
No visit would be complete without saying hello to some of everyone’s favorite yellow troublemakers.
Character meet-and-greets happen throughout the day, giving kids the chance to snap photos, dance, and interact with the Minions in true hilarious fashion.
Parent Tips for Bello Bay Club
- Bring water shoes if your kids plan to spend time in the splash area.
- Pack an extra outfit or swimsuit for little ones.
- Keep a small towel in your backpack—it’ll come in handy after water play.
- Visit this land during the hottest part of the day to take advantage of the splash features.
Our Take: Bello Bay Club was the perfect way to wrap up a day at Universal Kids Resort. Between the water play, colorful attractions, and Minion antics, it felt like the ultimate place for kids to burn off any energy they had left before heading back to the hotel.
Should You Stay at the Universal Kids Resort Hotel?
If your budget allows, our biggest recommendation is to stay at least one night at the Universal Kids Resort Hotel.
After spending a full day in the park with our 3-year-old and 5-year-old, we were so glad we didn’t have to load everyone back into the car and drive somewhere else. Instead, we could continue the fun back at the hotel before getting a good night’s sleep and heading back into the park the next morning.
For families traveling with younger children, staying on-site makes the entire experience feel much more relaxed.
Early Park Admission
One of the biggest perks of staying at the Universal Kids Resort Hotel is Early Park Admission.
Hotel guests can enter the park before it opens to the general public, giving you extra time to experience some of the most popular attractions with shorter wait times.
If your child has their heart set on a specific ride or character meet-and-greet, this extra time can make a huge difference.
Parent Tip: We recommend arriving at the park entrance before Early Park Admission begins so you’re ready to head straight to your family’s must-do attractions.
Family-Friendly Rooms
One thing Universal did exceptionally well is designing rooms with families in mind.
The rooms are colorful, playful, and themed without feeling over-the-top. They still have all the comforts parents appreciate after a long day at the park.
Depending on your family’s size, you’ll find a variety of room options, including:
- Standard Rooms
- Themed Family Rooms
- Suites for larger families
If you’re traveling with grandparents or multiple children, it’s worth comparing room layouts before booking to find the best fit for your group.
Curiousity Café
One of our favorite surprises at the hotel was Curiousity Café.
Whether you’re grabbing breakfast before heading into the park, picking up coffee in the morning, or stopping for a quick bite after a full day of adventures, it’s incredibly convenient to have dining just steps from your room.
For families with young kids, that convenience can’t be overstated—especially when everyone is tired after a day in the park.
The Pool
Don’t make the mistake of thinking the pool is just something to do if you have extra time.
For many families, it becomes part of the vacation itself.
Our kids loved being able to swim after spending the day in the park, and we appreciated that the hotel provides complimentary life jackets, making it easy for families who don’t want to travel with their own.
Whether you’re taking an afternoon break or winding down before bedtime, the pool is a great place to let kids burn off one last bit of energy.
The Arcade
If your kids still have energy after a day in the park (somehow!), the arcade is another fun option.
Filled with family-friendly games, it’s an easy way to keep the fun going without ever leaving the hotel.
It’s also a great rainy-day activity or something to enjoy while waiting for dinner.
Is Staying Overnight Worth It?
For our family, absolutely.
Could you visit Universal Kids Resort in one day? Yes.
Would we choose to stay overnight again? Without question.
Between Early Park Admission, the convenience of being just steps from the park, the family-focused rooms, the pool, and the ability to enjoy everything at a slower pace, staying on-site made the trip feel like a true family vacation instead of just a day at a theme park.
If you’re traveling from out of town—or even if you live just a few hours away—we think spending the night is one of the best ways to experience everything Universal Kids Resort has to offer.
