If you’re considering a trip to Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii with little kids, this guide is for you!

We recently stayed at Aulani with our kids, and before our trip I had SO many questions. Is Aulani actually worth the price with a toddler? What can little kids do? Are there enough activities for kids who aren’t strong swimmers? Do you need a rental car? What do you do when your kids wake up at 5:00 AM because of the time change?!

After experiencing the resort as a family, I can confidently say there is a LOT to know about doing Aulani with little kids—and some of the smallest details can make a huge difference.

So I put everything I wish I had known into one place.

This is my complete guide to visiting Disney’s Aulani Resort with babies, toddlers and preschoolers, including the pools, beach, characters, food, rooms, Aunty’s Beach House, free activities, what to pack, what to skip and all of my best tips for making an Aulani vacation with little kids easier.

Aulani Quick Facts for Parents

Disney’s Aulani Resort is located in Ko Olina on the western side of Oahu, about 20 miles from Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. Unlike Disneyland or Walt Disney World, Aulani is NOT a theme park. There are no traditional Disney rides.

Instead, think of it as a beautiful Hawaiian beach resort that also happens to have Disney characters, incredible pools, a lazy river, waterslides, kids’ activities, and plenty of Disney magic mixed in. And honestly? That combination works really well with little kids.

A few quick things to know:

• Aulani is located in Ko Olina on Oahu.
• The closest major airport is Honolulu International Airport (HNL).
• Standard hotel rooms and suites are available beginning at 3:00 PM on check-in day, while Disney Vacation Club Studios and Villas are available beginning at 4:00 PM.
• Checkout is by 11:00 AM.
• If you arrive before your room is ready, you can check in and leave your luggage with Bell Services and use a special lounge with showers and changing rooms if you want to go swimming!
• Aulani has traditional hotel rooms as well as studios and multi-bedroom villas.
• You do NOT need theme park tickets to visit Aulani because there is no theme park attached to the resort.
• Aulani has multiple pools, a lazy river, waterslides and a protected beach lagoon.
• There are both complimentary and paid activities throughout the resort.
• Disney characters regularly appear at the resort.

TODDLER TIP: Don’t plan Aulani the way you would plan a Disney World vacation. You do not need an itinerary for every 30 minutes of the day. Some of our favorite parts of the trip were simply letting the kids swim, play on the beach and see where the day took us.

Is Aulani Worth It With Toddlers?

This was one of my biggest questions before visiting. If I’m going to spend Aulani prices, are my little kids actually old enough to enjoy it? I think Aulani is actually one of the easiest Disney vacations to do with young kids. At a Disney theme park, toddlers can absolutely have an amazing time, but you’re also dealing with ride heights, stroller parking, Lightning Lanes, long park days, lines, and trying to squeeze naps into a packed schedule.

Aulani is completely different.

Your toddler can spend the morning splashing in the water, eat lunch in a swimsuit, take a nap and then head back out to look for Mickey. There are things happening around the resort, but you don’t feel like you’re wasting a $150 theme park ticket if your toddler needs a three-hour nap. For families with kids approximately 2–8 years old, I think Aulani hits a particularly sweet spot.

They are young enough to be completely excited about seeing Mickey and Minnie but old enough to enjoy the pools, splash areas, beach and resort activities.

What can toddlers and little kids actually do at Aulani?

A LOT.

There are easily enough activities to spend several days here without leaving the resort.

How Many Days Do You Need at Aulani?

I would personally recommend at least 3 full days at Aulani, but I think around 4–6 nights is the sweet spot for a first trip with little kids. Could you stay longer? Absolutely. But Aulani is expensive, and there is also so much to see around Oahu.

If this is your family’s first trip to Hawaii, I love the idea of splitting the vacation between Aulani and another part of the island. For example: 3–5 nights at Aulani + 2–4 nights elsewhere on Oahu. That gives you dedicated resort days without feeling guilty about leaving the resort you’re paying so much to enjoy.

Getting From Honolulu Airport to Aulani

Aulani is approximately 20 miles from Honolulu International Airport, but drive time can vary significantly depending on traffic.

You have a few options:

Rental Car

A rental car makes sense if you’re planning to explore Oahu during your Aulani stay.

The downside is that you’ll need to factor parking into your budget, and if you plan to spend most of the trip at the resort, your car may sit unused.

Private Transfer or Rideshare

If your plan is essentially: Airport → Aulani → Airport you may not need a rental car at all. A private transfer can also make traveling with car seats and multiple kids easier if you arrange the appropriate child restraints in advance.

What I Would Do

If I were spending several dedicated days at Aulani and then exploring Oahu, I’d compare the cost of keeping a rental car the entire trip against renting one only for the days we actually planned to leave Ko Olina.

Choosing the Best Aulani Room With Little Kids

Your room matters a LOT more when traveling with little kids. Before kids, a hotel room was mostly somewhere to shower and sleep. With toddlers? Your hotel room is also a nap room, snack station, changing room, early-morning hangout spot and potentially the place where one parent sits silently in the dark at 8:00 PM. Aulani has traditional hotel rooms as well as Disney Vacation Club Studios and larger Villas.

Standard Room vs. Villa

For a shorter stay, a standard hotel room may be all you need. For a longer trip with little kids, however, having more space can be extremely valuable. Some of the villas include full kitchens and washers/dryers, which can be a game changer with kids. Being able to wash swimsuits, pajamas and toddler clothes without packing your entire house is a huge benefit. And a kitchen means you don’t necessarily have to buy three restaurant meals every single day.

Is an Ocean View Worth It?

This is going to depend heavily on your budget.

A gorgeous ocean view is obviously amazing, but if upgrading your view means sacrificing several hundred dollars that could go toward the luau, character breakfast or another night at the resort, I wouldn’t consider it essential.

With little kids, I would prioritize:

1. Enough sleeping space
2. A room layout that works for naps
3. Convenient location
4. Kitchen/laundry amenities if staying longer
5. View

Grocery Shopping at Aulani

One of my biggest recommendations for families with little kids is to get groceries. Even if you’re planning to eat most meals at the resort, having familiar snacks and easy breakfast foods in the room is SO helpful. You don’t want to buy a full restaurant breakfast every time your toddler announces they’re starving at 5:47 AM. Aulani does have some groceries and necessities available on property, but families may also want to shop before arriving or arrange grocery delivery.

What I Would Order

For little kids, consider:

• Fruit
• Bananas
• Berries
• Applesauce
• Pouches
• Granola bars
• Crackers
• Cereal
• Microwave oatmeal
• Bagels

Aulani Pool Guide for Little Kids

The pool complex is one of the biggest reasons I think Aulani works so well for families. Instead of having one giant hotel pool, there are several different water experiences throughout the resort. That means you can find something that works whether you have a cautious 2-year-old or an adventurous 5-year-old.

Waikolohe Stream Lazy River

This was one of those quintessential Aulani experiences for us. The lazy river winds through the resort’s Waikolohe Valley and makes you feel like you’re floating through a tropical garden. For little kids, it’s also a great activity when everyone needs something slightly calmer than running around a splash pad.

Menehune Bridge

If you have preschool-age kids, put Menehune Bridge high on your list. This interactive water-play structure has slides, water features and plenty of opportunities to get absolutely soaked.

Keiki Cove Splash Zone

For younger toddlers, Keiki Cove is one of the areas I’d check out first. It’s designed as a water-play area for younger children and is less intimidating than jumping straight into one of the resort’s larger pools.

Ka Maka Grotto

Ka Maka Grotto is Aulani’s infinity-edge pool overlooking Ko Olina. It’s beautiful and a fun place to swim as a family, particularly later in the day.

Waterslides

Aulani also has bigger waterslides for kids and adults who meet the current requirements. If you’re traveling with children of different ages, this is a good place to use the divide-and-conquer strategy: one parent takes the older child to do slides while the other hangs out with the toddler, then switch.

Life Jackets

The resort has complimentary life jackets that you rent each day. You must return them by 8pm each evening.

Aulani Beach With Toddlers

One of my favorite things about Aulani’s location is the lagoon. Aulani sits on Ko Olina Lagoon 1, which provides a much more protected beach environment than many open-ocean beaches around Hawaii. That doesn’t mean you stop watching little kids around the water—this is still Hawaii and still an ocean—but the lagoon setting can be much easier for families than dealing with large shore-breaking waves.

Things to Do at the Beach

Depending on availability and current offerings, families can:

• Play in the sand (complimentary sand toys available at 8am)
• Swim
• Relax on the beach (free beach chairs with umbrellas)
• Paddleboard (this is a paid activity)
• Boogie board (complimentary rentals start at 8am)
• Explore the lagoon (there’s a great walking path next to the beach)

FREE Things to Do at Aulani With Kids

One thing that’s easy to overlook when budgeting for Aulani is how much you can do without paying for another major experience.

Your resort stay gives you access to a huge amount of entertainment and recreation.

Offerings vary by day, but your trip could include things like:

• Pool time
• Lazy river
• Splash areas
• Beach time
• Character appearances
• Menehune Adventure Trail
• Family games
• Select crafts
• Entertainment
• Lawn activities
• Storytelling or cultural activities
• Movies or evening activities on select dates

The important thing is to check the Daily ‘Iwa schedule in the lobby or download the app and check the daily schedule there. The schedule changes, and this is where you’ll find what’s actually happening during YOUR stay.

DO THIS EVERY MORNING: Check the Daily ‘Iwa before making your plan for the day. Some activities only happen at specific times and some require advance reservations.

Meeting Disney Characters at Aulani

Yes—there are Disney characters at Aulani! And I actually love meeting characters here because you’re not trying to squeeze them in between rides and Lightning Lane reservations.

Characters and schedules can vary, but Mickey and friends make appearances around the resort, often in their adorable vacation/Hawaiian outfits. The important thing to know is that you should check the current character information during your stay rather than assuming a particular character will appear.

Our Character Strategy With Little Kids

Don’t build your entire day around characters. Instead, check the schedule and choose the one or two your kids care about most. Then spend the rest of your day enjoying the resort. That keeps character meetings magical instead of turning your relaxing Hawaii vacation into another Disney rope-drop strategy session.

Aunty’s Beach House: What Parents Need to Know

Aunty’s Beach House is Aulani’s kids club and one of the resort’s most talked-about amenities for families. There are complimentary activities as well as premium experiences, and reservations may be required.

This is one area where you absolutely want to check the current age, registration and reservation requirements before your trip because Disney can change the programming and procedures. When we went, you had to have kids 4+ in order to be dropped off at the kids club.

Is Aunty’s Beach House Worth It?

For an eligible child who is comfortable being dropped off, YES.

This could give parents time to:

• Have a quiet meal
• Visit the spa
• Sit by the pool
• Walk along the beach
• Or—wild concept—have an entire conversation without someone asking for a snack.

Best Aulani Activities by Age

This is how I would think about Aulani for different ages.

Babies & Young Toddlers: Ages 0–2

Best bets:

• Beach mornings
• Splashing in appropriate shallow water areas
• Stroller walks
• Character interactions
• Family meals
• Exploring the resort
• Nap-friendly afternoons
• Early evening entertainment

At this age, you’re mostly taking advantage of Aulani being an easy place for the entire FAMILY to vacation.

Toddlers & Preschoolers: Ages 3–4

This might be one of my favorite ages for Aulani.

Try:

• Keiki Cove
• Menehune Bridge if they meet applicable requirements
• Lazy river
• Beach
• Character meetings
• Menehune Adventure Trail
• Crafts
• Family activities
• Character breakfast
• Luau
• Eligible Aunty’s Beach House activities

Preschool & Early Elementary: Ages 5–8

At this age, kids can start taking advantage of even more of the resort.

They may especially love:

• Waterslides they qualify for
• Menehune Bridge
• Lazy river
• Pool games
• Beach activities
• Character experiences
• Menehune Adventure Trail
• Aunty’s Beach House
• Crafts
• Luau
• Snorkeling experiences if they’re comfortable in the water.

Is the Aulani Character Breakfast Worth It?

Aulani hosts a Disney Character Breakfast, which can be a great splurge for families with young kids. The big advantage is that you’re combining breakfast AND characters into a single vacation time instead of using separate vacation time for each.

As of the current published menu, character breakfast runs from 7:00–11:00 AM and includes a three-course breakfast with a separate keiki menu for children ages 9 and under. For little kids who love Disney characters, this is one of the paid experiences I’d be most likely to book.

My Tip

Book an early breakfast if your kids are already going to be awake because of the time change. A 7:00 AM character breakfast feels considerably less painful when your child has been awake since 4:52 AM. Plus, I felt like there were fewer people for the first breakfast time slot, meaning more interaction for your kids with the characters.

Is the Aulani Luau Worth It With Toddlers?

KA WA’A is Aulani’s luau experience. This is one of the bigger splurges you can add to your trip, so the question becomes:

Is it worth paying for with a toddler?

I think this depends heavily on your child. If your toddler can sit through a longer dinner/show experience and loves music and dancing, it can be a memorable family night.

WORTH THE SPLURGE: For families who want a special cultural/show experience without leaving the resort.

MAYBE SKIP: If your kids are exhausted by 5 pm every night.

The Perfect Early Morning at Aulani With Jet-Lagged Kids

If you’re coming from the mainland United States, there is a very good chance your kids will wake up ridiculously early for the first few mornings. Instead of fighting it, USE IT. Here’s what an ideal early morning can look like:

5:00–6:00 AM: Wake Up + Room Breakfast

Keep the lights low, pull out those groceries you were smart enough to buy and let everyone slowly wake up.

Around Sunrise: Walk the Resort

This is one of the prettiest and most peaceful times to explore Aulani. Walk down toward the lagoon, look at the ocean and let the kids burn some energy.

Early Morning: Beach Time

Once it’s light and conditions are appropriate, this can be an amazing time to enjoy the lagoon.

Breakfast

Either head back for breakfast or schedule an early Makahiki breakfast on one of your jet-lag mornings.

When Pools Open: SWIM

By the time everyone else is easing into their morning, your kids may feel like they’ve already lived an entire day. Then you can swim before heading back for an early nap.

JET-LAG TIP: Don’t book a bunch of late nights at the beginning of your trip. Use those early wake-ups to your advantage instead.

Nap Strategy at Aulani

Do not underestimate naps. Aulani is stimulating: sun, swimming, characters, sugar and nonstop activity. Even kids who don’t normally nap may crash.

Option 1: Room Nap

Best for kids who really need sleep. One parent can stay in the room while the other takes an older child somewhere else.

Option 2: Stroller Nap

If your child sleeps well in a stroller, this can keep your resort day moving. Find somewhere shaded and quiet and let them sleep.

Option 3: Everyone Takes a Break

This is underrated. Go back to the room around the hottest part of the afternoon, shower, turn on a movie and relax. Then come back out around 4:00 PM feeling like functional humans again.

What to Pack for Aulani With Little Kids

You do NOT need to bring your entire house to Hawaii.

But a few things can make the trip significantly easier.

You can keep this casual.

Pack:

• Lightweight clothes

• Pajamas
• A couple of nicer outfits if you’re doing special dinners/photos
• Light layer for evenings
• More swimsuits than you think you need

PACKING TIP: Two swimsuits per child is my minimum. Putting a toddler into yesterday’s cold, wet swimsuit at 7:30 AM is a very specific form of vacation misery.

What You DON’T Need to Pack

Aulani is a full-service resort, so don’t waste precious suitcase space bringing things you can easily get there or don’t actually need.

Depending on your family’s needs, I’d think twice about packing:

• Full-size beach towels
• Huge beach toys (they have free ones to borrow)
• Tons of dressy clothes
• Too many shoes
• Excessive pool gear

Check Aulani’s current amenities before your trip so you know exactly what’s provided.

Things I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Aulani With Kids

Here are some of the biggest things I would tell another parent before their first trip:

1. Don’t overschedule your vacation.

Your kids might choose the lazy river over the activity you carefully planned six months ago. Let them.

2. Check the Daily ‘Iwa every day.

Activities change, and the Aulani app will help keep you ahead.

3. Make your must-do reservations ahead of time.

If there’s one character meal or special activity you absolutely want, don’t assume you’ll be able to book it after arriving. Some reservations open up to 45 days before your arrival.

4. Order groceries.

Even if you only use them for breakfast and snacks, it’s worth it.

5. Take advantage of jet lag.

Early mornings in Hawaii can be magical.

6. Plan around naps—not against them.

A rested toddler is worth missing one activity.

7. You don’t need a paid activity every day.

You’re already paying to stay at Aulani. Enjoy what’s included!

8. Give yourself an entire pool day.

No reservations. No excursion. No complicated plan. Just swim.

9. Don’t skip the beach.

It is very easy to get distracted by all the Disney activities and spend your entire vacation at the pools. You’re still in Hawaii!

10. Don’t expect Disneyland.

Aulani’s Disney magic is intentionally more subtle. That’s part of what makes it special.

Should You Leave Aulani?

This is a surprisingly difficult question. You flew all the way to Oahu, so obviously you want to explore Hawaii. But you’re also paying Aulani prices. My advice? If you have a short Aulani stay, don’t leave.

If you’re staying longer or this is your only time on Oahu, dedicate specific days to exploring the island instead of constantly coming and going.

Potential family-friendly Oahu activities include:

• North Shore
• Waikiki
• Pearl Harbor
• Dole Plantation
• Haleiwa
• Kid-friendly hikes
• Beaches around the island
• Scenic drives

Another option is to split your accommodations and do your Oahu sightseeing before or after Aulani.

That way, your Aulani days are actually Aulani days.

How to Save Money at Aulani

Aulani is not a cheap family vacation. But there are ways to control the cost.

Get Groceries

Breakfast and snacks are the easiest meals to save on.

Don’t Book a Paid Experience Every Day

You could easily spend hundreds—or thousands—adding activities to your vacation. Pick the experiences your family genuinely cares about.

Spend Time at the Resort

You’re already paying for the pools, beach and included activities. Use them!

Consider Your Room Category Carefully

Would your family rather have an ocean view or another night in Hawaii? There’s no universally correct answer, but it’s worth asking.

Split Your Oahu Stay

Instead of paying Aulani prices on days you’re planning to be gone from 8:00 AM until dinner, consider staying somewhere else for the sightseeing portion of your trip.

Aulani With Toddlers FAQ

Is Aulani good for toddlers?

Yes! I think Aulani is particularly good for toddlers and preschoolers because so much of the resort can be enjoyed without traditional ride-height requirements or long theme-park days.

Is Aulani a theme park?

No. Aulani is a Disney resort located on Oahu. There are no traditional Disney theme-park rides.

How many nights should you stay at Aulani?

For a first trip with young kids, I think approximately 4–6 nights is a great amount of time.

Is Disney Aulani Worth It With Little Kids?

For our family, Aulani wasn’t about packing as much Disney as possible into every day.

It was almost the opposite.

Our kids could see Disney characters and experience Disney magic while we were still having an actual Hawaii vacation.

We could spend the morning floating around the lazy river, eat shave ice, go back to the room for a nap, play at the beach and see Mickey without ever getting on a shuttle or waiting in a theme-park security line.

And with little kids, that slower pace is what makes Aulani special.

My biggest piece of advice is to resist the urge to do everything.

Pick a few experiences that matter to your family, make reservations for your must-dos and leave plenty of empty space in your schedule.

Because there’s a very good chance the thing your toddler remembers most about your expensive Hawaiian Disney vacation will be going around the lazy river 47 times.
