I get it. While traveling, maintaining the healthy habits that you’ve developed at home can be HARD! I mean, why wouldn’t you splurge and get the dessert at the fancy restaurant or swap your typical water for a sugary beverage? You’re on a trip after all!
However, eating like that can be okay once in a while, but if you know that your vacation is more than a few days long, then all those unhealthy habits can really add up quick! Here are 5 insanely easy way that we use to eat healthy while traveling:
Have some sort of kitchen in your rental
Whether you are renting a hotel or a campsite, there are always options available to be able to cook some of your own meals. For example, when booking a hotel check out long-term stay hotels because they tend to have a small kitchen.
If those aren’t available, you can find hotel rooms that have a mini fridge and a microwave which can help considerably in your quest of eating healthy! Campsites usually have fire pits and sometimes even provided grills available. Bring a cooler to replace the need for a fridge.
Plan your road trip meals and snacks in advance
Like most things in life, planning is key. I go from not hungry to starving in approximately 3.2 seconds so it’s so important that I have healthy snacks on hand or else we usually end up pulling over at a greasy fast food restaurant.

Plan ahead. By visiting grocery stores to purchase food not only do you save a lot of money, but it’s a lot easier to find healthy options. In some supermarkets, they even have a deli with fresh meals available for purchase.
Order healthier options at restaurants
Because of recent trends, most restaurants have several healthy plates available for those looking for a lighter meal. While you’re traveling it’s typical to eat out, but no one is making you order the full rack of ribs with a side of everything.
Chicken and rice, salads, vegetable-packed sandwiches, etc. are all available! A recent study was conducted and a few popular fast food joints that offer healthier meals include Chipotle, Chick-fil-A, Subway, Panera Bread, and even Wendy’s!
Watch what you are drinking
My weakness? Diet Coke. If I could I would love to drink one a day. Now while I don’t do that, I do tend to drink more soda while traveling. It gets really easy to start answering the “What do you want to drink?” questions with a sugary beverage name when you’re not at home. Resist the urge and try to stick with water! Not only will it keep you more hydrated, but it’s also a much healthier option.
