As a CPST and a mom who has traveled with little kids all over the world, the Cosco Scenera Next has been my ride-or-die travel car seat for years. It’s been with us on countless flights, taxis, rental cars, Ubers…you name it. I’ve raved about it to parents because it was:

  • Lightweight enough to carry through an airport without breaking a sweat.
  • Affordable, so you didn’t feel nervous checking it or gate-checking if needed.
  • Narrow enough to fit in tiny airplane seats without fighting the armrests.

So you can imagine my mixed emotions when I learned that the Scenera Next is being discontinued.
Sad, because this seat was the go-to for travel families like mine… but also excited, because Cosco just released its “new replacement”: the Cosco Scenera Extend. Note- If you already own the seat, it is still safe to continue to use it.

Why the Change?

This isn’t just a rebrand. The Scenera Next had to be updated to meet the new U.S. car seat regulations (FMVSS 213a), which add standardized side-impact testing. Those changes go into effect in June 2025, and the Extend is built to meet them.

What’s New with the Cosco Scenera Extend

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Bigger Shell – It’s taller and a bit wider, meaning your child can use it longer before outgrowing it.
  • Higher Weight Limits – Forward-facing now goes up to 50 lbs (was lower on the Next), which is huge for longevity.
  • New Side-Impact Protection – Meets the latest safety standard.
  • Still Lightweight & Affordable – It’s slightly bigger, but Cosco kept it travel-friendly and budget-conscious.

Taking the Extend on the Plane

One of my first questions as a travel mom: “Will it still work for flying?”
The answer is yes—but with a couple of notes:

  • It’s still FAA-approved for use on airplanes.
  • It’s slightly wider than the Scenera Next, so you might need to lift the armrest or angle it in to fit, especially on smaller aircraft.
  • You can still carry it through the airport easily, especially if you pair it with a strap, travel backpack, or rolling luggage attachment.
  • For rear-facing on a plane, it should still work well for most toddlers under the limits, though legroom will vary by airline.

Will it fit on the plane?

The Cosco Scenera Extend is around 18.25″ wide at its widest point.
That means:

  • On many planes, it will fit, but it may be a tight squeeze in narrow economy seats.
  • You might need to raise the armrest or slightly angle the seat in to get it into position.
  • In the middle seat, it can sometimes feel snug if both neighboring passengers are in their seats.

My Pro Tips for Flying with the Extend:

  1. Board early if your airline offers family boarding so you’re not trying to wedge it in while the row is full.
  2. Lift the armrest during installation — this often makes the difference in narrow seats.
  3. Request a seatbelt extender from the flight attendants if the buckle ends up under the seat base — it *might* tighten much more easily.

Why I’m Still Excited

While I’ll always have a soft spot for the Scenera Next, the Extend solves one of my only complaints—kids outgrowing it too quickly. With the taller shell and higher harness height, this is going to be an even better option for families who want one car seat for years of travel.

It’s the same philosophy I’ve always loved: safe, light, easy to carry, and kind to your budget—just with more time before you have to upgrade.
